SPORTS SHORTS: Drake’s Wendell honored by MVC

ST. LOUIS — Drake’s Lizzy Wendell was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Weeek after a 34-point perfomance agaisnt North Dakota on Nov. 11. The Bulldogs won 99-91 on the road.

The honor is the 10th of Wendell’s career, coming off a 14-for-23 clip that led to her eighth-career 30-plus point game. The senior missed a double-double with nine rebounds in the contest.

Wendell has now scored in double figures for 79-straight games, a streak which started her freshman year.

Drake will head to Creighton on Thursday night, tipping off at 7 p.m.

Gustafson selected for B1G award

IOWA CITY — Iowa’s Megan Gustafson nabbed her second-career Big Ten Player of the Week after a double-double efforts in the Hawkeyes’ wins against Oral Roberts and Hampton this weekend.

Gustafson posted back-to-back double-doubles in the two contests, with a tie for career-high 25 points with 12 rebounds against Oral Roberts on Friday. Two days later, Gustafson posted 14 points and 11 boards on her way to help lead the Hawkeyes against Hampton.

In her two games this season, the sophomore is averaging 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds. It was her 11th double-double in 15 games.

Iowa heads to North Dakota for the first road trip of the year on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

MVFC picks UNI’s Schult for accolade

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Northern Iowa senior defensive end Karter Schult has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Schult was key in UNI’s win over No. 17 Western Illinois on Saturday. He anchored a defensive line that allowed 96 rushing yards, the third game in the last four that UNI has held its opponent under 100 yards on the ground.

Schult racked up six total tackles, including four for loss and three quarterback sacks.

The Panthers are back in the UNI-Dome this Saturday when they take on No. 11 South Dakota State at 4 p.m. in their regular-season finale.
