Balanced Bulldogs top Hawks

DES MOINES — A balanced attack was all the Drake women’s basketball team needed as it held on to take down in-state rival Iowa on Sunday in an 81-76 win at the Knapp Center.

Caitlin Ingle had 20 points and seven assists while Becca Hittner had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to help bounce Iowa (8-4) at home.

The Hawkeyes were led by Ally Disterhoft’s 24 points and Megan Gustafson’s double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds.

The win for Drake (6-3) snaps a 14-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes. The last time Drake topped its rival from Iowa City was Nov. 25, 2001, a 75-72 win in overtime.

“Today was a big win for us,” Baranczyk said. “And I think it’s a big win because one, it’s taken a long time to get here. But the second piece is that it was a complete and total team effort.”

The 20 points for Ingle matched a season-best for her as the game was made on runs.

Gustafson was 10-for-14 from the field and Disterhoft was 8-for-15 in the Hawkeyes’ loss.

“I don’t know why [they didn’t],” Bluder said. “Because why go away from the well when it’s giving you water?”

Lizzy Wendell posted a 6-for-15 line with 15 points for Drake and Becca Jonas had 12 points on 50 percent shooting and made three of her four free throws.

“I think we’re both really good teams,” Baranczyk said. “We have a lot of respect for each other. I think this game means more than a coach playing against a former player. This is about Drake, and it’s about Iowa.”

Points in the paint were nearly even, with Drake having the edge with 36 points to Iowa’s 34.

The Bulldogs made their free throws down the stretch, but were held without a field goal for the final three minutes of the game.

“I’ve got to be patient with them,” Bluder said of her team. “Obviously they lost a little bit of their swagger outside of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we’ve been shooting it. But again, I thought Drake came out with more intensity, more focus. And they executed very well on offense.”

Drake will head to New Orleans to play in the Tulane Classic on Wednesday, tipping off against Auburn at 3 p.m. If Drake were to win, they’d play on Thursday against either Eastern Washington or Tulane.

Iowa heads back to Iowa City to host Kent State on Tuesday, tipping off at 5 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
