Cyclones snap back, hit 100 vs. Privateers
AMES — After a lackluster finish against No. 6 Mississippi State nearly 24 hours prior, the Iowa State women’s basketball team rebounded with confidence with a 100-63 win against the University of New Orleans on Sunday.
The first quarter seemed to pick up right where the Cyclones (6-1) left off Saturday, sluggish and lacking offense. The Privateers (3-4) outscored Iowa State 15-13 in the first stanza, while the Cyclones shot just 1-for-5 from the 3-point line.
However, a second-half surge where the Cyclones outscored their opponent 58-37, shooting 6-for-8 from the 3-point line, gave Iowa State the rebound win it needed.
Overall, Iowa State shot 6-for-15 from the arc, including a 5-for-5 spot in the second quarter. The Cyclones shot a total 80 percent from the field in the second period, as well, bumping them to a 58.9 percent mark for the entire game.
“We kind of went away from the game plan of keeping them off the 3-point line,” said New Orleans head coach Keeshawn Davenport. “We lost by 37 and they had 36 points from behind the 3-point line. So we must find a way to stick to the plan in this kind of environment.”
Six different Cyclones scored double-digit figures, with Emily Durr coming off the bench with 19 points, shooting 5-for-7 from 3-point range. Jadda Buckley had 18 points and nine assists, while Meredith Burkhall tallied 17 points on 70 percent shooting Sunday.
Bridget Carleton, Adriana Camber and Claire Ricketts all had 10 points, with Camber and Ricketts’ 20 points coming off the bench.
Iowa State will head to Iowa City for the annual Cy-Hawk Series match. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
