Free throw helps Panthers edge Jays

CEDAR FALLS — Jaylyn Agnew hit a 3-pointer to tie the game 49-49, but a foul on the other end on Megan Maahs sent her to the free-throw line where she converted one of two to give the UNI women’s basketball team a 50-49 win against Creighton on Saturday.

The Blue Jays (4-4) had nine seconds to work with, but a steal by Mikaela Morgan with seven seconds remaining sealed the deal for the Panthers (5-4).

Madison Weekly and Maahs had 12 points apiece to lead the Panthers. Agnew came off the bench for 16 to lead Creighton.

Panther defenders held the Blue Jays to shooting just 27 percent from the floor, while forcing 14 turnovers. The Panthers also held Creighton’s leading scorer Audrey Faber to just six points (she averaged 14 points per game).

Weekley hit a 3-pointer out of halftime to set a tone for her team, sparking a 7-0 run which saw Morgan score five-straight to give the Panthers a 34-28 lead. The Panthers were up by three points at the end of the third quarter after a Rose Simon-Ressler 3-pointer put the Panthers ahead.

Hannah Schonhardt had nine rebounds and Weekly added seven assists to her line. Morgan also helped the Panthers’ scoring efforts with 11 points of her own.

Seven turnovers by the Panthers were a season-low, while dominating the paint, outscoring Creighton 28-14 inside.

UNI will play host to North Dakota on Dec. 18, tipping off at 2 p.m.
