SPORTS SHORTS: Morgan named MVP Player of the Week
CEDAR FALLS — Jeremy Morgan grabbed his second Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week award after a double-double performance against North Dakota on Saturday.
Morgan helped lead the Panthers against North Dakota 78-70 with a career-high 38 points — all in the second half — on 10-for-17 shooting. Morgan set a McLeod Center record with 22 free throws attempted.
With 17 points and eight rebounds, Morgan added to his week during an 86-58 win against South Dakota State on Wednesday. Morgan was 6-for-11 in that game, including 5-for-8 3-point shooting.
Johnson honored by Big 12 Conference
IRVING, Texas — For the first time this season, senior guard Seanna Johnson was named the Big 12 Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week by the league office on Monday. It’s the seventh time in her career she’s earned a league honor, as well as grabbing freshman of the week five times and co-Big 12 player of the week once last year.
Johnson averaged 25.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and two assists in a loss against Iowa and Northern Illinois.
Against Iowa, Johnson netted 18 points, six rebounds and three assists in a loss. The senior guard followed up her performance in Iowa City with 33 points, the second-most by a Big 12 player this year and a career-high for Johnson.
It’s now the third time an Iowa State player has received the honor, with the other two coming to Jadda Buckley for her performances earlier this season.
Maahs earns MVC’s newcomer award
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Northern Iowa’s freshman Megan Maahs was named Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
For the second time this year, Maahs put in the winning bucket for the Panthers. In a 50-49 win against Creighton, Maahs hit a free throw to put the Panthers ahead by one before time expired.
Maahs had 12 points for her third time going for double-digits, grabbing seven rebounds as well.
Iowa sweeps Big Ten weekly honors
ROSEMONT, Ill. — Senior Peter Jok and redshirt freshman Isaiah Moss were named Big Ten Conference Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively. After a sluggish start to the season, the Hawkeyes picked up a pivotal win against then-No. 25 Iowa State at home on Thursday last week.
Jok had 23 points and nine rebounds against Iowa State, and preluded the upset with 15 points and eight rebounds, while handing out eight assists against Stenson.
Moss averaged 17.5 points and five rebounds in the Hawkeyes’ two wins last week. Moss had personal best in points (21), steals (2) and rebounds (6) against Stenson, while shooting 50 percent from the arc.
Iowa will take on Northern Iowa at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday, tipping off at 3:30 p.m.
Hawkeyes’ Davis selected for accolade
IOWA CITY — After a momentous week, Iowa sophomore Tania Davis earned the Madness Big Ten women’s basketball Player of the Week, by College Sports Madness on Monday.
Davis averaged 18.5 points while shooting 52.6 percent from the field and going 6-for-10 from the arc in a pair of wins against Iowa State and Robert Morris last week.
Davis had 23 points, five made 3-pointers and tallied seven field goals against Iowa State. She posted a 7-for-11 and 5-for-6 (3-pointers) mark against the Cyclones.
The sophomore then netted 14 points, going 7-for-7 from the free-throw line and helped Iowa grab its third win in six days.
Iowa heads to Des Moines to take on Drake at the Knapp Center on Sunday, tipping off at 2 p.m.
