PREP WRESTLING: Bobcat matmen blanked at Ankeny
ANKENY — Class 3A No. 10 Reese Hageman rolled through the Ankeny Duals Invitational on Saturday, winning all five of his matches to be the only Marshalltown wrestler undefeated through the afternoon.
The Bobcats as a team, however, did not earn a win, going 0-5 on the afternoon in losses to Ankeny (68-9), Ottumwa (48-24), Sioux City North (40-27), Bondurant-Farrar (42-24) and Spencer (42-29).
All five of Hageman’s wins were by fall at the 152 weight class. Andy Bitker picked up four wins after losing his first, pinning his next four opponents to cap the afternoon at 220.
Both Wyatt Himes and Brian Trowbridge earned winning records at 145 and 160, respectively.
Himes lost his first two before winning his final three. Trowbridge earned a win against an Ankeny wrestler, dropped the next two, and finished Saturday off with two wins against Bondurant-Farrar and Spencer.
Next up for Marshalltown is the CIML Invitational on Friday, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Southeast Polk.
Willett leads Storm
GREENE — Coby Willett shared the best finish by any South Hardin/BCLUW wrestler, as he took third place at the Doug Trees Bearcat Invitational on Saturday.
Willett earned a 13-9 decision against Lake Mills’ Alex Martinson to take third at 126. Taylor Kolthoff also placed third, making it to the semifinals at 106 before falling to North Butler’s Bryce Trees in an 11-3 major decision. Caleb Engle lost to Drake Harnish (Lake Mills) in the quarterfinals of 195 and Mason Dhyne fell to Max Johnson by pin in the quarterfinals as well at 220.
The Storm have a triangular with Sumner-Fredericksburg and MFL MarMac on Monday in Monona.
Trojans go to I-35 tourney
TRURO — Hunter Pfantz advanced to the 113-pound finals and finished second to lead the West Marshall wrestling team at the Rich Gray Classic hosted Saturday by Interstate 35 High School.
Pfantz (23-9) was defeated by Albia’s Aden Reeves in the finals, 17-2.
Jake Vawter finished third at 106, winning by fall in the quarterfinals before getting pinned in the semifinals. He scored a 10-0 major decision in the third-place match over Des Moines East’s David Huck. Luke Kalinay came in sixth to round out the Trojans’ medalwinners.
