Bulldogs outlast Purple Aces, 88-76

DES MOINES — A second-half surge helped propel the Drake men to their second conference win of the year in an 88-76 win against visiting Evansville on Sunday.

Reed Timmer had 28 points on 4-for-7 3-point shooting and three bench players had 10-plus points in the win.

Casey Schlatter was 6-for-6 from the line and 2-for-3 from the floor for 11 points, while De’antae McMurray and TJ Thomas had 10 points apiece for Drake (4-12, 2-2 MVC).

It was an evenly-paced game between the two squads. Drake had the edge down low, scoring 32 points in the paint to Evansville’s 30. The Purple Aces (10-7, 1-3 MVC) didn’t have as much production off turnovers, however, as Drake converted 10 Evansville give aways into 16 points.

The Purple Aces had just five off eight Drake turnovers.

“It was realy back-and-forth until the end,” said Drake head coach Jeff Rutter. “We had not had a string of stops until the 3:40 mark where we had a string of five-straight stops when we moved to man-to-man down the stretch.”

Drake gets back to action Wednesday at 7 pm., tipping off against Indiana State in Des Moines. The Bulldogs are hosting ‘We Back the Blue’ night, making admission free for all law enforcement officials and their families.
