Bulldogs still unbeaten in MVC play

DES MOINES — Whatever the halftime message was for the Drake women on Sunday, it worked wonders.

The Bulldogs came out of the break, outscored visiting Southern Illinois 22-7 in the third period, and secured at 75-59 win against the Salukis to remain perfect in conference play. Senior Lizzy Wendell posted a game-high 24 points and was 50 percent from the floor in the win. Becca Jonas had 13 and Brenni Rose came off the bench to score 11 for the Bulldogs (11-4, 4-0 MVC).

Southern Illinois (7-8, 1-3 MVC) was led by Carlie Corrigan’s 14 points and Rishonda Napier and Kylie Giebelhausen each had 12 in the loss.

Drake dominated inside, outscoring its foe 40-10 in the paint, and forced 21 turnovers where it scored 19 points off the take aways.

The Bulldogs shot 30-for-59 from the floor and were 9-for-14 in the third quarter alone. A three-point lead at halftime was quickly erased by the lights out shooting in the third stanza. It was the fifth consecutive win for Drake.

Drake will head to Bradley on Friday, tipping off at 7 p.m.
