Carleton’s big day not enough for ISU

Cyclone sophomore scores 30 in loss to TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Iowa State women’s basketball team’s finishing struggles continued as it let TCU climb back into, and win Sunday’s contest, 80-75 in Fort Worth. Bridget Carleton had 30 points and nine rebounds to lead the way for the Cyclones (10-7, 1-5 Big 12).

Iowa State led 38-27 at the half, but left the Horned Frogs (9-8, 1-5 Big 12) post 29 points in the third quarter to regain a two-point lead heading into the final period. Seanna Johnson posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while becoming the No. 10 player in school history in career points with 1,453.

Carleton carried a majority of the game on her back while shooting 10-for-27 from the floor and going 4-for-14 from the arc. She was perfect (6-for-6) from the free-throw line.

TCU was led by Jada Butts’ 25 points, while AJ Alix had a team-high eight assists and Jordan Moore pulled down 11 rebounds.

TCU strung together a 17-2 run early in the second half to cut its deficit and eventually retake the lead. The Cyclones led by as much as 13 points in the third quarter, early, but TCU took its largest lead by six late in the fourth quarter.

With 1:21 left in the game, a layup from Carleton tied the game back up at 70-70. But a 3-pointer from Toree Thompson (14 points, 3-for-5 3-pointers) sparked the final run for the Horned Frogs.

TCU had 32 points in the paint to Iowa State’s 22 points. The 23 bench points from the Horned Frogs also surmounted Iowa State’s dismal four points.

The Cyclones are back in action on the road Wednesday, taking on No. 2 Baylor at 7 p.m. in Waco.
