Cyclone women clobber Jayhawks

AMES — Iowa State had no problem getting its first conference win of the season in an 87-58 victory against Kansas at Hilton Coliseum.

Even though the Cyclones (10-5, 1-3 Big 12) had a four-plus minute scoring drought at the end of the game, they held on for a 29-point win. Five Cyclones scored double-digit points, with Bridget Carleton leading the way with 21.

Heather Bowe was the only Cyclone with a double-double, putting up 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Seanna Johnson had 15 points and eight boards; Emily Durr had 14 points and Jadda Buckley had 13 points and five assists.

There was never really a moment for the Jayhawks (6-9, 0-4 Big 12) to rival their conference counterparts. Iowa State jumped out to an 18-4 first-quarter lead, and led 43-19 at the break.

The biggest deciding factor for Iowa State was its 28 points off 19 Kansas turnovers. Despite Iowa State giving the ball up 23 times, Kansas was only able to convert the give aways into nine points.

The Jayhawks had the advantage down low, posting up for 30 points in the paint to the Cyclones’ 24.

The 29-point win is the third-largest in the history between the two teams. It was also Buckley’s 45th-career game with five or more assists, and the 11th of the season.

Iowa State returns to Hilton Coliseum for its next game at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Oklahoma.
