Fast start fuels MCC to victory
IOWA FALLS — Estelle Eduardo scored a team-high 19 points and the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team held off Ellsworth CC for a 63-58 victory Wednesday night.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tigers (7-10), who led by as many as 14 points in the second half.
But the Panthers (8-7) put together a late run to pull within five, 55-50. Eduardo converted a fast break layup and sank a pair of free throws to seal the game in the closing two minutes. The double-digit scoring effort was her 12th of the season.
Claudia Morente added 12 points and Loralei Siliga contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshmen Alyssa Roth and Nisha Doby each chipped in eight points off the bench for MCC.
The Tigers outscored Ellsworth 19-8 in the second quarter to carry a 32-19 lead into halftime, sparked by a 12-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers by Roth and another for Doby.
The Panthers put up more points in each of the last two periods to tighten the final deficit. Ellsworth outscored MCC 39-31 in the second half, but it was not enough to cover the halftime margin.
Siliga’s three-point play pushed Marshalltown’s advantage to its highest of the game — 14 — but Ellsworth rallied back to within single digs before the final horn.
The final outcome made for a season split between Iowa Valley Community College District foes. Ellsworth won a 71-68 contest in Marshalltown on Nov. 22.
MCC has a week off before traveling to face Little Priest Tribal College on Jan. 18 in Winnebago, Neb.
