Ingle leads Drake past Sycamores

DES MOINES — It was a career-night for a pair of Drake women basketball players, as they facilitated a come-from-behind victory against Indiana State, 76-62.

Senior Caitlin Ingle posted a game-high nine assists to move into first place, all-time on the Missouri Valley Conference’s leader board with 687 dimes. Ingle also posted 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Senior Lizzy Wendell moved into third-place all-time in league history in career points with 2,289. Wendell had 29 points to lead the Bulldogs (15-4, 8-0 MVC) past the Sycamores (10-8, 4-3 MVC).

After a hot start and competitive first half, the two opponents were tied after the first 20-20, while the Sycamores went on a late 7-0 run and took a slight lead before the half, 41-37.

The game saw seven ties and nine lead changes, with the Bulldogs taking the lead for the final time when Wendell hit one of her two 3-pointers at 7:07 to go in the third quarter.

Drake outscored Indiana State 39-21 in the second half, holding the Sycamores to just five points in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Becca Hittner had 14 points and Becca Jonas had 12 to help out the scoring efforts.

Indiana State was co-led by 14-point efforts from Ashley Taia and Wendi Bibbins.

Other than the late run and eventual clinching runs the Bulldogs went on, the game was fairly matched throughout. Drake had the edge in the paint, 30-22, while also capitalizing on 17 Indiana State turnovers (17) and turning them into 20 points.

They Sycamores had six second-chance points and 14 bench points, compared to Drakes five points off 13 offensive rebounds. The Drake bench scored just three points from Brenni Rose.

The win makes it eight-straight in MVC play for the Bulldogs, and sets up an undefeated matchup between Northern Iowa (15-4, 8-0 MVC), in Cedar Falls on Friday, tipping off at 7 p.m.
