Iowa treats home crowd to victory against Gophers

IOWA CITY — Megan Gustafson had a double-double and three other Hawkeyes scored in double figures as the Iowa women’s basketball team, with a strong second half, defeated Minnesota 80-65 in front of a season-high crowd of 7,191 on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“First of all, I thought our crowd was great today,” said Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. “I really appreciate them coming out, supporting us, giving us some great energy, especially in that first half when it was kind of back and forth.”

Gustafson totaled 19 points and 12 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season, and 19th of her career. Ally Disterhoft finished with 17 points, and Kathleen Doyle added 11. Tania Davis scored 10 points and led the Hawkeyes (13-7, 4-3 Big Ten) with eight assists. Iowa trailed by two after the first quarter, and found itself down by one at halftime. The Hawkeyes then outscored the Gophers (11-9, 2-5) by seven in the third quarter, and nine in the final quarter.

Iowa outscored Minnesota 38-18 in the paint, and had 11 second-chance points to the Gophers’ two.

Iowa is off for the next week, not playing until next Sunday when the Hawkeyes travel to Maryland.
