No. 2 PSU pummels third-ranked Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY — The No. 2 Penn State wrestling team remained perfect after its bout with No. 3 Iowa on Friday night, coming away with a convincing 26-11 win.

Penn State (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) made it 25-straight dual wins, going back to the 2014-15 season.

Iowa (7-2, 3-1 Big Ten) got off to a hot start, up 8-0. At 125, No. 1 Thomas Gilman defeated No. 3 Nick Suriano in a narrow 3-2 decision, followed by No. 3 Cory Clark earning a 19-4 tech fall of George Carpenter.

Penn State would go on to win the next four bouts, and seven of the last eight, to secure the win.

At 149, No. 1 Zain Retherford and no. 3 Brandon Sorensen squared off in a rematch of the 2016 NCAA finals at their weight. It did not disappoint, as Retherford won by a 9-8 decision in a tiebreaker-2. The win was preceded by No. 12 Jimmy Gulibon grabbing a comeback victory against No. 18 Topher Carton, an 8-6 decision to grab the Nittany Lion’s first points.

At 157, the match featured the No. 1 and No. 2 wrestlers in its class. Penn State touted top-ranked Jason Nolf, and Iowa threw in Michael Kemerer. Nolf was in control early and often, as he came away with a 9-4 decision.

No. 13 Alex Meyer was the next and last Iowa victory of the night, earning a 7-5 decision of Mark Hall at 174.

No. 2 Bo Nickal and No. 5 Sammy Brooks was set to be a much anticipated bout, but Nickal found the right move early, and pinned Brooks in just 38 seconds at 184.

At 197, No. 10 Matt McCutcheon had to got to two tiebreaker periods as well, grabbing an 8-7 decision from Cash Wilcke, all but sealing the deal for Penn State. No. 5 Nick Nevills won by tech fall, 26-11, of Iowa’s Steven Holloway to close out the night.
