BOYS HOOPS: No. 3 G-R withstands West Marshall challenge

REINBECK — The Class 1A No. 3 Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys basketball team squeaked by West Marshall 63-57, halting a two game skid Friday night in NICL West action.

Joe Smoldt guided the Rebels (9-2, 6-0 NICL West) with 29 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Smoldt had 19 by halftime, and made eight free throws in the fourth quarter. Caden Kickbush and Tyler Pierce finished with the same amount of points and boards, each finishing with 11 points and six rebounds.

West Marshall (5-10, 3-5 NICL West) was led by David Disney with 16 points and eight rebounds. Alex Dickey added 12 points, while Beau Coberley contributed 11. Joseph Halverson posted nine points, and Josh Larsen finished with six.

G-R travels to Hudson today for a cross-NICL game, while West Marshall hosts Grundy Center on Tuesday in NICL West play.

East Marshall 84, Grundy Center 55

GRUNDY CENTER — Ty DeBondt made seven 3-pointers to lead East Marshall past Grundy Center on the road 84-55 on Friday night.

Zaine Leedom added 22 more and Dru Boliver had 14 in the Mustangs’ (9-3, 6-1 NICL West) fourth-straight win. Grundy Center (4-9, 2-6 NICL West) was led by Bryce Flater’s 16 points. Drew Rathe had 12 points and on three made 3-pointers, Chase Boren had nine points.

Despite a tie game at 17-17 after the first quarter, East Marshall would go on a 20-2 run in the second quarter to get up 44-25 at the half.

East Marshall is off until Tuesday, when it will seek revenge against AGWSR at home. The Mustangs lost their first game of the year, 48-44 on Dec. 9.

Grundy Center will hit the road at Meskwaki on Monday and at West Marshall on Tuesday next week.

AGWSR 57, BCLUW 16

ACKLEY — The AGWSR boys’ basketball team had no problem handling visiting BCLUW in its 57-16 win at home.

The Cougars (9-3, 6-1 NICL West) came out firing, taking a 12-1 lead after the first quarter, and led 35-9 at halftime. AGWSR looked to Nathan Karsjens’ 14-point night to help lead them to their fourth-straight win. Alex Hames, Brent Janssen, Caleb Bartling and Sawyer Heitland all had six points to help the effort.

For the Comets (2-11, 1-7 NICL West), Logan Mann led the way with seven points. Bradley Bell, Blake Mann, Clay Silver and Nathan Hulbert all had two points.

Karsjens added three rebounds and three steals to his line. Janssen had a team-high five boards.

AGWSR heads to Denver for a cross-NICL matchup on Saturday, before hitting the road again at East Marshall on Tuesday.

LATE THURSDAY

North Tama 56, Meskwaki Settlement 53

TRAER — Will Earley scored a team-high 17 points to go with six rebounds Thursday as the North Tama boys’ basketball team held off Meskwaki Settlement 56-53 for a regular-season sweep of the Warriors in Iowa Star Conference South Division action.

Jake Hlas tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists as the Redhawks (6-8, 6-6) won for the third time in their last four games. Nicholas Sieraa scored nine points off the bench while Jacob Gorder had six points and seven rebounds. Joe Earley had four points and seven boards as well.

Tate Bear netted 22 points and Jarius Bear had 19 for Meskwaki (6-8, 6-7), which fell behind 32-21 at the half before rallying to within three after the third period, 36-33.
