Northern Iowa wrestlers nearly shut out Eagles

CEDAR FALLS — The 18th-rankend Northern Iowa wrestling team came up just a match short of a perfect afternoon, as it routed visiting Eastern Michigan on Sunday 35-4.

The lone loss of the game was a 16-6 major decision of Northern Iowa’s Tyler Willers by Kyle Springer at 141. It was the last contested match of the afternoon, just prior to No. 8 Max Thomsen winning by forfeit at 149. Of the Panthers’ eight contested matches, none were by fall, while two were by tech fall and two more by major decision.

“I don’t really care how these guys score points,” said UNI head coach Doug Schwab. “We are going to try to put them in their best positions and widen the gap on guys. That is starting to happen across the board. As a team, we are starting to open things up.”

Northern Iowa (7-2, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) head to Ohio for a dual with the Bobcats. The meet starts at 7 p.m. in Athens.
