CEDAR FALLS — A seven-game losing streak is no more for the Northern Iowa men’s basketball team, as it snapped its skid against in-state rival Drake, 79-60, on Sunday at the McLeod Center.

Jeremy Morgan was back from an ankle injury, posting 21 points, while junior Bennett Koch went matched his senior teammate’s efforts with 21 more to lead Northern Iowa. Jordan Ashton chipped in 17 points as well.

Drake was led by Reed Timmer’s 18 points, coming on 3-of-6 3-point shooting. Timmer was 6-for-11 from the field, while Billy Wampler went for eight points and a team-high six rebounds.

An 18-0 Panther run following a 7-4 lead by Drake boosted the Panthers (6-11, 1-5 MVC) to a sizable lead. At the break, Northern Iowa was up 20 points (45-25).

“They threw a pretty good curveball at us in the first half,” said Drake head coach Jeff Rutter. “They trapped in the first half and it was effective. It caused turnovers and allowed shot blockers to be more effective and impact the game.”

Turnovers were pretty even throughout the game, with Drake giving the ball away 13 times, and Northern Iowa coughing it up 12 times.

The Northern Iowa bigs did work inside on Drake (5-13, 3-3 MVC), outscoring the Bulldogs 36-16 in the paint.

Drake, which has won four of its last seven games and four-straight at home, return to the Knapp Center on Wednesday to host Southern Illinois at 7 p.m.
