SPORTS SHORTS: Beaty leads Bobcat JV past Gilbert
GILBERT — Conner Beaty had 28 of the Marshalltown junior varsity boys’ basketball team’s 63 points in a 63-55 Bobcats win against Gilbert on Monday.
Marquis Haynes added 10 more points and Reid Nennig had six to pace the Bobcats along. Sam Brintall recorded five points while Ryan Bates had three.
Of Beaty’s 28 points, 24 came on eight 3-pointers made. Haynes made four baskets in the first half, including 2-for-2 free-throw shooting.
Wendell honored by MVC once again
ST. LOUIS — For the second time this season, Drake senior Lizzy Wendell was named the Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week. Wendell, who was the Player of the Week on Nov. 14.
Wendell, who was also named MVC Preseason Player of the Year, powered the Bulldogs to 4-0 in conference play last week, averaging 23.5 points, 3.5 assists, three steals and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 59.3 percent in their two games.
This is the 11th-career Player of the Week honor for Wendell, who is now tied for second in MVC history for all-time honors receiving the award. Only Jackie Stiles of Missouri State has more with 18.
Iowa wrestling hosts free youth clinic
IOWA CITY — The Iowa wrestling program will host its annual Youth Wrestling Clinic on Feb. 3 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The clinic will be held prior to the Wisconsin dual.
Youth ages 5 to 13 years old are welcome to participate in the event.
There is no cost for the event. Enrollment is limited to the first 100 entries, and all who would like to participate must register in advance.

A signed medical release form will be attached with a confirmation email and must be turned in at the check-in table at the south entrance to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Each child will be given a wrestling youth clinic T-shirt.

Saubert gets NFL Combine invitation
The National Football League has invited former Drake University tight end Eric Saubert to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
At 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Saubert received All-America honors from four different organizations after ranking second among tight ends in the nation in receiving yards per game (70.5) and receiving touchdowns (10). He led Drake with 56 catches for 776 yards.
Saubert will get a chance to impress NFL personnel in the East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 21 in St. Petersburg, Fla. The NFL Combine is Feb. 28-March 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Energy fire Matt Woodley as coach
DES MOINES — Matt Woodley has been fired as head coach of the NBA Development League’s Iowa Energy.
The Energy announced Monday that Woodley had been relieved of his duties. Glynn Cyprien has been named interim head coach.
Woodley had been Iowa’s coach since last May. Iowa is the D-League affiliate of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.
Cyprien joined the Grizzlies organization in 2014-15 as a basketball operations assistant/scout. He also had worked as a University of Memphis assistant coach from 2009-11 on Josh Pastner’s staff. He was an associate head coach at Texas A&M from 2009-11.
