SPORTS SHORTS: Boliver nets 1,000th point in victory

MARENGO — East Marshall’s Dru Boliver surpassed 1,000 career points with his nine-point affair Thursday, helping the Mustangs to a 74-29 win against Iowa Valley.

Boliver now sits at 1,001 points as he hit three field goals (two 3-pointers) and was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line Thursday. Zaine Leedom led the way with 19 points on eight made baskets and 3-of-5 from the charity stripe.

Jimmy Sylvester came off the bench to post 10 more points (four baskets, two 3-poitners) and Ty DeBondt had seven to help the scoring effort.

Iowa Valley (4-9) was led by Jake Jordan with 7 points, as he made two 3-pointers in the first half.

The Mustangs (8-3) is at Grundy Center tonight, tipping off at 7:45 p.m.

West Marshall girls wallop Hudson

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team hammered out 27 points in a decisive second quarter as the Class 3A No. 7 Trojans took care of Hudson 66-42 in Thursday’s cross-NICL make-up game.

West Marshall (14-0) outscored the winless Pirates 17-11 in the second quarter on its way to a 42-20 halftime lead, and the Trojans coasted from there.

Brooke Snider led West Marshall with 18 points to go with seven rebounds and four steals. Emma Meyer finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and six steals, and Kayla Cripps contributed 13 points.

Shannon Breja tallied eight points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists, and Teresa Disney netted seven points in the win.

Hudson (0-13) was led by Maddie McKenna with 12 points, and Olivia Kolterman with nine.

EM/GMG tops Trojans for NICL split

LE GRAND — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team came away with a win against cross-county rival West Marshal, but fell to Denver-Tripoli to go 1-1 at its home wrestling triangular Thursday night.

Denver-Tripoli won 58-18, with just three Mustangs (8-16, 5-7 NICL) getting wins. In one of the bigger matches of the night. EM/GMG’s Class 2A No. 7 Nick Meling defeated No. 9 Blake Steege in a 7-5 decision at 120 pounds.

Meling’s win was immediately after Carson Burchland pinned Carter Littlefield in 3 minutes and 35 seconds at 113.

The Mustangs would have to wait until 170 for their next win, when Cole Nauman earned a 7-2 decision from Brady Brocka.

The Mustangs got their win against West Marshall, 48-33, in the final bout of the night.

Hunter Pfantz was the Trojans’ lone two-match winner, as he pinned Denver-Tripoli’s Jacob Brandt in 59 seconds in their 71-12 loss to the Cyclones. Pfantz came back to pin Burchland in the second period (3:04) for his second win.

Meling grabbed a second victory by forfeit against West Marshall, and Nauman pinned Garrett Riemenschneider at the 182 level in 38 seconds for his second win of the night.

South Tama wrestlers split in WaMaC

WILLIAMSBURG — The South Tama wrestling team relied on its four ranked wrestlers to come out with a 42-33 win against Benton Community, but fell as a team against Williamsburg 48-30.

All four of the Trojans’ (11-7) ranked wrestlers earned two wins, starting off with Class 2A No. 5 (126) Brady Fritz, earning a pin against Benton Community’s Austin Timmerman in 1 minute, 2 seconds. No. 8 Tanner Probasco earned a forfeit win at 132, while No. 4 (138) Colton Vest won by decision against Keaton Bonewitz, 10-4.

Fifth-ranked Isaac Judge grabbed a pin against Taylor Schulze in 1:36 at the 152 level as well.

Benton’s only ranked wrestler, No. 10 Blade Durbala, pinned Mario Moncada in 46 seconds at 220.

Fritz, Probasco, Vest and Judge all earned pins against their respective Williamsburg opponents, helping the Trojans jump out to a 24-6 lead. But the Raiders won seven of the last nine matches to edge out the win against STC.

RebelHawks take care of Sailors

FAIRBANK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck/North Tama wrestling team grabbed a 48-18 win against Waterloo Columbus Catholic, but fell 56-18 to Wapsie Valley on Thursday night.

Tanner Claderwood and Cael Kopriva were the lone RebelHawks top earn two wins against Columbus Catholic and Wapsie Valley.

Calderwood earned a forfeit win at 220 against Columbus Catholic, as well as a pin of Matthew Richards in 1 minute, 35 seconds.

Kopriva pinned Wapsie Valley’s Peyton Brown in 5:35, while getting another pin in 28 seconds of Adam Parsons (Columbus Catholic) at 160.
