SPORTS SHORTS: Comets outlast Wolverines on the road

GARWIN — Three BCLUW boys went for double-digit points as the Comets muscled out a win on the road, 54-50, against GMG on Saturday.

Logan Mann had 15 points, Troy Dolphin had 13 and Clay Silver posted 12 in the Comets’ first win in four games. Jonny Neff led BCLUW (3-11) with seven rebounds, while Chase Luethje had six.

No stats were available for GMG (6-7).

The Comets host Dike-New Harford tonight at 7:45 p.m. p.m. GMG is off until Friday, heading to Waterloo Christian.

Gienger goes for 19 in loss to Hudson

HUDSON — Taylor Gienger had 19 points with five 3-pointers but Hudson was able to outlast Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s attempted comeback, handing the Rebel girls’ basketball team a 46-42 loss on Saturday.

Morgan Kelley snagged 12 rebounds and had nine points for the Rebels (0-14), while Maddie Frischmeyer and Megan Swanson each had seven points.

Hudson earned its first win of the season, moving to 1-14 on the season. Stats for the Pirates were not available.

The Rebels host South Hardin tonight in NICL West play.

Peterson leads RebelHawk wrestling

TRAER — Jace Peterson maneuvered his way through the 126-pound bracket, coming out on top with a first-place finish for the Gladbrook-Reinbeck/North Tama wrestling team Saturday.

Peterson was perfect with bye in the first round, pinning Pleasantville’s Alex Bartels in his second match and following it up with another pin in 4 minutes, 30 seconds, in the third to win the 126 title.

Cael Kopriva was second at 160, with his sole loss of the afternoon coming to Class 1A No. 9 Griffen McBride of Pleasantville. McBride pinned Kopriva in 3:53.

Two RebelHawks took third place at their respective weights. Both Zane Nelson (106) and Noah Skornia (132) each had third-place finishes. Cory Isenhower (138), Jacob Snyder (145), Tyler Morrison (170), Conway Feisel (195), Tanner Calderwood (220) and Peyton Willenbring (285) were all fourth at their weights.

Chase Morrison was fifth at 152 and Bronson Wrage was sixth at 182.

G-R/NT hosts a quadrangular with AGWSR, Union and West Marshall tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Reinbeck.

Slow start too much for Royals boys

TRIPOLI — A sluggish start was too much to overcome for the Colo-NESCO boys’ basketball team on Friday, falling to Tripoli on the road, 54-46.

Garret Tiarks led the Royals (10-5, 9-3 Iowa Star) with 16 points and six rebounds, while Parker Eley had nine points on three 3-pointers and Jacob Clatt had a team-best seven boards in the loss.

The Royals found themselves in an early hole, down 22-10 at the break. A 19-14 third-quarter got Colo-NESCO back to within seven, but the Panthers (8-5, 7-3 Iowa Star) were able to hold on.

Zach Johnson and Elias Seehase both led the Panthers with 13 points.

Don Bosco too much for Warriors

GILBERTVILLE — Jarius Bear had 30 points, three assists and two rebounds in the Meskwaki boys’ basketball team’s loss to Don Bosco on Friday night, 73-54.

The Dons (13-1, 11-0 Iowa Star) challenged the Warriors (6-9, 6-7 Iowa Star) all evening, answering at every turn.

Despite trailing 14-10 after the first quarter, the Dons outscored the Warriors in the final three frames, 63-40.

Tate Bear had nine points, Emmett Roberts had seven and Keahna Demarce had five in the loss. Tate led the Warriors with five rebounds.

Meskwaki hosts Grundy Center tonight at 7:45 p.m.

Double-double propels Redhawks

CLARKSVILLE — Four Redhawks scored in double figures in the North Tama boys’ basketball team’s 69-52 win at Clarksville on Friday night.

Both Will Earley and Jake Hlas led the Redhawks (7-8, 5-7 Iowa Star) with 14 points apiece, Jacob Gorder had 13 on three 3-pointers and Joe Earley posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Tahahwah leads Warriors past Dons

GILBERTVILLE — Grace Tahahwah made eight field goals, three 3-pointers and tallied a team-best 22 points in the Meskwaki girls’ basketball team’s 58-36 win against Don Bosco on Friday.

Tori Lasley posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Delicia Guevara had seven points and five assists for Meskwaki (10-7, 7-5 Iowa Star).

Abigail Iron Shell had eight points and Danielle Syemour had six more for the Warriors.

Meskwaki hosts Grundy Center tonight, tipping off at 6:15 p.m.

Champions crowned in girls’ MOBI

Two champions were crowned Saturday at the 24th annual Marshalltown Optimist Basketball Invitational (MOBI) for girls.

In fifth grade, the West Marshall Trojans won two games but lost in the championship to the Ankeny Swarm 35-7.

In sixth-grade pairings, the Oskaloosa Blaze won the title with the Ankeny Charge finishing second. East Marshall won one game, defeating the Marshalltown Bobcats 47-12.

A total of eight teams from grades 5-6 played in girls’ MOBI, which is sponsored by the Marshalltown Noon Optimist Club. Two Marshalltown teams were entered in this year’s event after none had played the previous two years.

The boys’ MOBI for players in grades 5-8 — with 24 boys teams entered, including three from Marshalltown — will be played February 4.
