SPORTS SHORTS: Shomo’s big night buoys Bobcats
Austin Shomo scored a whopping 31 points as the Marshalltown freshman boys’ basketball team defeated Johnston 68-67 in overtime in Friday’s CIML Iowa Conference game at Lenihan Intermediate School.
Among Shomo’s 11 field goals were five 3-pointers, and he was 4-for-6 at the free-throw line to lead the Bobcats to victory.
Will Van Buren made a pair of treys en route to 17 points, and Trevor Stamp added eight points for MHS (8-5, 3-2).
The Bobcats go to Mason City in CIML Iowa action on Monday night.
MHS sophomores edged by Johnston
Wade Canaday’s team-leading 24 points wasn’t enough to propel the Marshalltown sophomore boys’ basketball team to victory as Johnston topped the Bobcats 71-64 on Friday night at the Roundhouse.
Bennett O’Hare had 14 points, Eric Kapayou added seven points and Jonah Daniel had five for the Bobcats.
Marshalltown is back in action Monday with a road game at Mason City.
Cougar wrestlers swept by NICL duo
ACKLEY — The AGWSR wrestling team struggled at its home triangular, falling to both Hudson and Jesup, 46-24 and 54-23, in respective NICL contests Thursday night.
Dayton Haley, Caleb Meinders, Seth Mazoway and Lucas Schumacher all earned wins against Hudson, and Ali Gerbracht received a forfeit.
Brody Roder ended up scoring the Cougars’ only non-forfeit win against Jesup, a 22-7 technical fall of Keaton Roscovius in 5 minutes, 37 seconds.
