SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall girls roll to 16-0

STATE CENTER — Brooke Snider went for 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead the Class 3A seventh-ranked West Marshall girls’ basketball team past Woodward-Granger, 65-36.

The Trojans (16-0) jumped out to an early and substantial lead, never looking back, up 20-5 after the first quarter and 35-12 at the half.

Teresa Disney put up 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds, a night removed from her first-career double-double against Gladbrook-Reinbeck. Shannon Breja had eight, Kayla Cripps had seven and Georgia Porter had six to help lead the Trojans in scoring.

Kendra Husmann led the Hawks (5-10) with 10 points and Riley Jamison had nine.

West Marshall begins a five-game homestand to wrap up the regular season, beginning with NICL West foe Grundy Center on Tuesday.

Karsjens leads Cougars past Denver

DENVER — Getting 30 points from Nathan Karsjens, the AGWSR boys’ basketball team topped Denver 75-51 in cross-NICL play. Jay Janssen scored 12 points as 12 different Cougars (10-3) scored in the win.

AGWSR jumped out to a 21-9 lead by the end of the opening quarter, and led 45-25 by halftime. Janssen led AGWSR with seven rebounds, and Tate Hofmeister paced the Cougars in assists, dishing out four helpers. Denver (4-8) was led by Bo McMahon with 18 points, and Sam Joerger added 13.

AGWSR is at East Marshall Tuesday for an NICL West game.

Smoldt’s 37 points power No. 3 G-R

HUDSON — Getting double digits from three different players, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team dispensed Hudson 73-54 Saturday in cross-NICL play.

Joe Smoldt paced the Rebels (10-2) with 37 points, six rebounds and four assists. Tyler Pierce chipped in 11 points, while leading G-R with seven boards. Caden Kickbush contributed 12 points and two blocks. Matt Roeding had five points and six rebounds, while Jackson Kiburis added three points and five boards.

The Rebels host South Hardin Monday for an NICL West game.

AGWSR girls gobble up Cyclones

DENVER — Behind 13 points from freshman Rachel Sicard, the AGWSR girls’ basketball team ran away from Denver 73-41 in cross-NICL action Saturday.

Maddie Brandt helped lead the Cougar (10-4) charge with 11 points and nine rebounds. Aubrie Fisher had 11 points as well, pulled down eight boards and five assists. Addison Johnson was responsible for nine points, six boards and five steals. Mandy Willems helped offensively with nine points and seven assists.

No. 14 Royals outlast Tripoli girls

TRIPOLI — Kassie Robinson had 17 points, Faith Vincent had 13 and Grace Stalzer added 10 as the Colo-NESCO girls’ basketball team got by Tripoli 62-51 Friday in Iowa Star Conference action.

Stalzer led the Class 1A No. 14 Royals (13-2, 12-1 Iowa Star) with eight rebounds, and Robinson pulled down seven boards. Tripoli (10-4, 10-3 Iowa Star) was led by Kennedy Drewis with 25 points, and Ali Harms added 14 points.

Colo-NESCO opens a five game homestand Tuesday, hosting Valley Lutheran in conference play.
