UNI matmen upset No. 13 Chippewas
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The No. 22 Northern Iowa wrestling team grabbed its first win against a top-15 team this season with a 17-16 victory against No. 13 Central Michigan on Sunday.
The Panthers (5-2, 3-0 MAC) earned the victory by criteria, when the final score ended at 16-16. Each team had won five matches, but the final score came down to point differential at each match, and the Panthers earned the final team point to stay perfect in conference play.
“We had some guys step up,” said UNI head coach Doug Schwab. “Our guys responded well, but it shouldn’t have come down to criteria. That’s how much I believe in our guys. There were three or four matches that could have gone our way.”
The win comes on the day of Schwab’s 100th dual as the UNI head coach. No. 15 Drew Foster knocked off the reigning MAC champion at 184, now No. 14 Jordan Ellingwood, in a 3-1 decision. JJ Everard also earned 5-2 decision against Newton Smerchek, who is the No. 4 heavyweight in MAC rankings, to help the Panthers to a win.
“JJ had a beautiful single and drove through the guy,” Schwab said. “He did it so well and looked awesome. It was a high-level attack, and he could score more often. He can widen that gap. The momentum is on his side.”
Northern Iowa will hit the road and head to in-state rival Iowa State on Friday.
