UNI women stay perfect in MVC play

CEDAR FALLS — Despite a low-scoring affair, the Northern Iowa women stayed perfect in conference play with a 54-40 win against Evansville on Sunday.

Sophomore Ellie Herzberg led the Panthers (11-4, 4-0 MVC) with 16 points off the bench, and senior Madison Weekly posted 12 on 4-for-5 free-throw shooting in the win. Brooke Dossett had 13 points to lead Purple Aces (7-8, 2-2 MVC).

Hannah Schonhardt pulled down 18 rebounds, 16 defensive, while she had five points.

Evansville struggled early, unable to put in a shot from behind the arc. The Panthers weren’t much better, however, with just 12 percent shooting from deep. Northern Iowa never trailed though, jumping out to a five-point lead midway through the first quarter.

The Panthers also outscored the Purple Aces down load 8-2 — and 24-14 by the end of the game — in the second period, but the Purple Aces found fight late heading into the break, down 26-23 to the Panthers.

Herzberg and Megan Maahs both went 60 percent from the floor, respectively, coming out of halftime, and outscored Evansville 18-5 in the third quarter.

Northern Iowa refused to let up on their press, outrebounding its opponent 14-8 in the final stanza to take a 14-point victory.

The Panthers are back in action on the road Friday with a match at Illinois State at 7 p.m.
