UNI women whip Braves in MVC play

PEORIA, Ill. — Madison Weekly scored 23 points and the Northern Iowa women’s basketball team easily handled Bradley, 72-53 on the road Sunday.

Megan Maahs, Ellie Herzberg and Kennedy Kirkpatrick all had 11 more points to help Weekly’s scoring efforts.

After Northern Iowa (13-4, 6-0 MVC) got off to a 21-10 lead in the first quarter, the Braves (5-11, 1-4 MVC) finally started keeping pace with the Panthers. Points in the paint were nearly even, with the Panthers having the edge 30-24. Offensive boards, although the differential was just 11 to nine, made a big difference for Northern Iowa. The Panthers put up 10 second-chance points.

Both teams struggled to start, going a combined 0-for-8 from the floor. It wasn’t until 6:34 left in the first quarter a bucket was made. A 9-0 run helped the Panthers jump out to their early and substantial lead.

Turnover differential was also key for Northern Iowa, forcing 15 errors to their own six.

Northern Iowa is at home on Friday, playing host to Indiana State, tipping off at 7 p.m.
