Gustafson helps Hawks keep Badgers at bay

IOWA CITY — It’s been a trying year, but the regular season ended with a win for the Iowa women’s basketball team Sunday, a 71-60 victory of visiting Wisconsin.

Megan Gustafson led the way with 22 points and 14 rebounds, her 15th double-double of the year, and Ally Disterhoft posted 19 more on the way to the win.

With the victory, the Hawkeyes (17-12, 8-8 Big Ten) secured the No. 8 seed in the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday.

“Well, a great way to end our regular season here with a nice crowd today,” said Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder. “[The seniors] all have done such a great job for us the last four years, so it’ s nice that they went out on a win on their home court, playing well.”

Despite a lull in the third quarter that allowed the Badgers (8-21, 3-13 Big Ten) to cut Iowa’s seven-point lead to one, a fourth-quarter surge allowed Iowa to regain a substantial lead and come away with the win.

“We had seven turnovers in 10 minutes of play, and so when you’re just not giving yourself an opportunity to score, it’s tough,” Bluder said. “And then we weren’t boxing out, either, so I think it was a combination of giving up too many offensive rebounds and just not valuing the ball.”

The Hawkeyes managed 20 points in the final stanza to Wisconsin’s lowly eight. Kathleen Doyle helped out with a team-high six assists and had four points as well.

Iowa dominated down low, outscoring the Badgers 46-28 in the paint, while earned 22 points off second-chance opportunities.

“We did a lot of nice things in that fourth quarter, and just really fitting to see [Alexa Kastanek] hit those two 3s,” Bluder said “That’s just one of those, again, storybook type of things; your senior comes in, it’s a couple of 3s in that fourth quarter and really gives us great life.”

The Hawkeyes will play the No. 9-seed Northwestern women on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Indianapolis at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
