MCC basketball splits twinbill with Northeast

Jamir Coleman sank the go-ahead free throw with seven-tenths of a second left on the clock, and the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a 77-76 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference victory against Northeast Community College Saturday night at the Student Activity Center.

Jalen Mobley hit a 3-pointer for Northeast (21-9, 4-4 ICCAC) to tie things 76-all with three seconds left, but Coleman drove the court and was fouled by Milan Skundric to be sent to the free-throw line with less than a second to play where he made the first of two shots. Brandon Simmons led MCC (17-11, 3-5 ICCAC) with a double-double 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Coleman supplied 16 off the bench. Souf Mensah added 11 points. The Tigers as a team went 30-of-48 from the charity stripe.

MCC led by as much as 14 points at 57-43 with 11:38 remaining in the second half before the Hawks came clawing back to tie the contest 71-all with a little more than a minute remaining. Marty Hill and Skundric led Northeast with 16 points each. Vance Johnson contributed a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards.

The Tigers will be back on the home court Monday, hosting Southeastern Community College in the first round of the Region XI Tournament. The game tips at 7 p.m. MCC claimed the first two meetings with the Blackhawks, winning 75-67 in Burlington on Jan. 14, and 90-86 at MCC on Feb. 1.

MCC women fall to Hawks

The Tigers got 17 points from Estelle Eduardo, but the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball fell to Northeast Community College 71-50 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play in the season finale Saturday night at the Student Activity Center.

MCC (11-17, 0-4 ICCAC) took a 15-13 lead with 3 minutes, 21 seconds left in the first quarter thanks to a 6-0 run that consisted of Dalia Cantu and Eduardo making back-to-back 3s. Eduardo finished the game 4-of-6 from long range, and her 17 points was the 19th time the freshman has scored in double figures.

The Hawks (26-3, 2-2 ICCAC) took the lead back with a minute in the first, and never looked back. Mykala Baylor paced Northeast with 26 points, and Maddie Egr finished with 12. Cynthia Jorge chipped in 11 for the Hawks coming off the bench.

These two teams will meet again on Wednesday in the Region XI Tournament opener, but on Northeast’s home court. The game is slated to tip at 5 p.m. Northeast topped MCC 102-46 the first time the two battled in Norfolk, Neb. On Jan. 28.
