Iowa, ISU wrestling get at-large bids

IOWA CITY — Joey Gunther, a redshirt freshman from Iowa, was awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships at 165 pounds on Tuesday.

Gunther is one of seven 165ers to earn an at-large berth. He was seventh at the Big Ten Championships this past weekend, missing the automatic qualifying bid.

Gunther was 18-8 this season with an RPI rank of 16, as well as a 16th-ranking by the coaches’ poll. He had six wins against RPI top 28 wrestlers.

Iowa will send eight wrestlers to the national championships. Gunther joins Thomas Gilman (125), Cory Clark (133), Topher Carton (141), Brandon Sorensen (149), Michael Kemerer (157), Alex Meyer (174) and Sammy Brooks (184).

The NCAA Championships are held March 16-18 in St. Louis, Mo.

Cyclones add a pair

TULSA, Okla. — Redshirt seniors Lelund Weatherspoon and Earl Hall joined automatic qualifier Marcus Harrington as contestants for the upcoming NCAA Championships.

Weatherspoon was fourth at 174, falling in an 8-5 decision to David Kocer, but managed to earn an at-large bid to the national championships.

At 133, Hall is also an at-large qualifier after defeating Air Force’s Dylan Hyder in an 8-5 decision. Harrington qualified with a fifth-place finish against No. 7 Cordell Eaton of NDSU, a 14-11 decision.
