SPORTS SHORTS: Mitrou-Long, Jok in 3-point contest

AMES — Iowa State’s Naz Mitrou-Long will compete in the 29th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships tonight at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix.

Mitrou-Long is one of eight participants, joining Iowa’s Peter Jok, in the field. The senior finished his career at Iowa State as one of the top 3-point shooters in school history. He hit 260 treys in his time in Ames, posting a 38 percent clip. With 93 3s this year, he led all Big 12 players and his 260 are second most by a Cyclone in school history.

The last Iowa State player to compete in the 3-point contest was Tyrus McGee in 2013. Before him, it was Dedric Willoughby in 1997 and Fred Hoiberg in 1995.

Mitrou-Long will compete against the following 3-point specialists: Bryce Alford (UCLA), Torian Graham (Arizona State), Kris Jenkins (Villanova), Peter Jok (Iowa), Matt Jones (Duke), DeWayne Russell (Grand Canyon) and Derrick Walton Jr. (Michigan).

The competition will air tonight at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

Senate honors Iowa’s national champ

The Iowa Senate voted unanimously Wednesday to approve Senate Resolution 14, proclaiming March 29, 2017, as Cory Clark Recognition Day.

The 133-pound NCAA Division I champion was honored at the Capitol building earlier this week after winning the national title at his weight on March 18 in St. Louis, Mo.

“It was a great experience,” Clark said “It was a pleasure to be honored by the Iowa Senate and House of Representatives. It made me aware that a lot more people than I thought had cared, actually care. I met a lot of great people sharing their feelings toward the sport of wrestling and toward me and what I achieved. I’m very thankful.”

ISU’s Prohm one of 20 award finalists

Iowa State men’s basketball head coach Steve Prohm has been named as one of 20 finalists for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award.

The honor is given out annually to a coach who has seen success on the court as well as showing moral integrity throughout the season.

Prohm wrapped up his second season at the helm of the Cyclones, leading them to a 24-11 record and another NCAA Tournament berth.

The award is named after Skip Prosser, who died suddenly in 2007 as the head coach of Wake Forest. The recipient of this year’s award will be announced in Phoenix at the national championship game.

Ex-Hawkeye coach Olson honored

Former Iowa men’s basketball head coach Lute Olson has been named the recipient of the 2017 National Association of Basketball Coaches Hillyard Golden Anniversary Award for his 50-plus years of outstanding service in men’s college basketball.

Olson led the Hawkeyes to the Final Four in 1980 before heading to the University of Arizona in 1983. While at Iowa, Olson was the Big Ten coach of the year twice and won the Big Ten Conference title in 1979. Iowa went to five-straight NCAA Tournaments and was 168-90 in his tenure in Iowa City.

While at Arizona, Olson coached the Wildcats to a 1997 national title, five Final Fours and was a 10-time PAC 10 Coach of the Year.

Olson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. Olson will receive his award on Sunday at the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix.
