Bobcat linksters score 3rd at Hawkette Invite
ANKENY — Blustery conditions did their best to deter golfers at Otter Creek Golf Course on Thursday, but the strong prevailed as Ankeny Centennial won the Ankeny Hawkette Invite with a 361. The Marshalltown girls’ golf team took third with a 389, led by Kassy Vest.
The junior golfer shot a 90 with windy conditions forcing her to adjust her game throughout the day.
“Kassy Vest had an excellent day from a ball-striking point of view,” said MHS golf coach Lucas Johnson. “She had seven three-putts on the front nine before figuring out the speed of the greens on the back where she had two putts or better the rest of the way.”
Vest ended up finishing fourth overall on a cardback.
Bella Russell also came through for the Bobcats, as she shot a career-low 92 to finish eighth overall, and second on the team.
“[Russell] benefitted from her ability to keep the ball in play and not let some of the tighter holes where water and out of bounds can lead to big numbers.”
Emily Hass was also a medalist finisher, coming in 13th with a 97.
Southeast Polk edged out the Bobcats for second with a team score of 383, while Valley was fourth (397) and Indianola was fifth (420). Tenley Moretti was the top finisher with a 76 for Ankeny Centennial. Anne Gradoville (Dowling Catholic) shot a 79 for runner-up honors.
