Bobcats make their move on the back 9

Emily Vest

AMES — The Marshalltown girls’ golf team played 22 strokes better on the back nine and climbed to a fourth-place finish at the Turk Bowman Invite on Monday afternoon at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.

Bobcat senior Emily Vest led the comeback, shooting a career-best 48-47–95 to medal as the eighth-place individual. Emily Hass, a junior, narrowly missed out on a medal but was Marshalltown’s second-leading scorer, shooting 56-54–110.

“I’m very proud of Emily Vest shooting her career-low for 18 holes given the difficulty of the day,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “She kept the ball in play and her short game was steady. She benefitted with a chip-in for birdie on No. 16, one of the toughest holes on the course.”

Juniors Ciara Feldman and Kassy Vest chopped a combined 19 strokes off their front-nine rounds to contribute to the Bobcats’ team scoring. Feldman carded 61-53–114 and Kassy Vest tallied 63-52–115 as a part of Marshalltown’s 434 team total.

“Veenker has teeth any day of the week, but on a day with winds gusting near 40 miles per hour it becomes a brute,” said Johnson. “I give our girls a lot of credit for battling all the way through some tough conditions.

Waukee was a runaway winner of the tournament, totaling 362 strokes to distance itself from the pack. Mason City was 33 shots behind in second place, followed by Nevada (406) and Marshalltown. Three strokes separated fifth place from seventh, as Dowling (441) edged out Indianola (442) and Des Moines Roosevelt (444) in the 10-team field.

Dowling Catholic’s Anne Gradoville was the meet medalist with her 43-36–79, and Waukee’s Brooke Boardman (42-39–81) was runner-up. Waukee’s four counting scores were all in the top 10.

Marshalltown is back on the road on Wednesday, visiting Urbandale Golf & Country Club for a CIML Iowa Conference dual against the host J-Hawks.
