MHS netters split at Tiger Invitational

WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ tennis team kicked off the 2017 season Saturday with a third-place finish at West Des Moines Valley’s Tiger Invitational.

The Bobcats defeated Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 10-1, but lost 11-0 to West Des Moines Valley, the 2016 Class 2A state runner-up. MHS senior Sean McWilliams was named to the all-tournament team.

Luke Smith claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win against Lincoln’s Nick Wailes. Jacob Rachuy bested Devin O’Neal 6-0, 6-1. McWilliams made quick work of Chandler McMullen 6-0, 6-1. Sam Brintnall took a 6-2, 6-1 win from Reed Wildasen, while Jack Gruening topped Ethan Snead 6-1, 6-3.

Lincoln’s Caleb Snead was the only Lynx to take a win from the Bobcats, besting Luke McKibben 1-6, 6-1, 1-0.

In doubles, McKibben and McWilliams dispensed Caleb Snead and Wailes 6-0, 6-2. Smith and Rachuy took a 6-1, 6-0 victory from O’Neal and McMullen. Brintnall and Brennin Davis bested Wildasen and Ethan Sneed 6-1, 6-0. Rounding out the Marshalltown victories was Joe Kennedy and Kadin Skala who defeated Mike Wailes and Nathan Fisher 6-0, 6-0.

The Bobcats travel to Des Moines East Tuesday.
