MHS SOCCER: No. 12 Waukee outlasts MHS boys, 1-0
WAUKEE — A goal in the 65th minute by Cade Longnecker was the difference as Class 3A No. 12 Waukee defeated the Marshalltown boys’ soccer team 1-0 Monday night.
“Waukee deserved the win,” said Bobcat head coach Chris Fuchsen. “They were creating opportunities but couldn’t finish.”
Marshalltown (0-2) had just one shot on goal in the loss, but Fuchsen credited Bobcat veterans Ricky Ibarra and John Boland for keeping MHS in the match. Alec Reynolds had three saves as Marshalltown’s goalkeeper.
The Bobcats travel to Mason City Friday for their first CIML Iowa Conference match of the season. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m. Marshalltown’s home opener is next Tuesday against Des Moines North.
Pella pours it on to beat Bobcat girls
PELLA — The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team was defeated 6-1 by Pella in Monday’s season opener.
The Lady Dutch scored three goals in both halves, leading 3-0 at the intermission before taking a 6-0 lead prior to Marshalltown finding the scoreboard. Katie Vander Molen had two goals and an assist for Pella (1-0), the reigning state runner-up in Class 2A. Bellara Huang, Ciara Buchheit, Grace Held and Maddie Canfield each scored goals as well.
The Bobcats’ lone goal came from Vanessa Armas, converting a pass from fellow junior McKenna Major with 2 minutes, 22 seconds remaining. Victoria Johnson stopped 14 of the 20 shots on goal she faced for MHS, which is now off for two weeks before visiting Newton on April 17.
