SPORTS SHORTS: STC/EM girls end lengthy losing skid

MANCHESTER — The South Tama County/East Marshall girls’ soccer team snapped a 42-match losing streak with a 2-0 win against West Delaware Monday evening. It was the first Trojan victory since May 30, 2014, a 10-0 win against CAL.

Sadie Smith tallied the first goal of the season for STC/EM (1-2), taking a shot from outside the 18 and got just in under the crossbar in the 19th minute. Autumn Papakee hit a shot off the post in the 50th minute for the other goal. The Trojans finished with eight shots on goal. Savanna Lopez turned away two shots in net for the Trojans.

STC/EM hosts Clear Creek-Amana Thursday.

West Marshall boys third at CMB

BAXTER — A handful of relay and individual firsts got the West Marshall boys’ track and field team a third-place finish Monday afternoon.

Ross Randall took first in the long jump, going for 19 feet, 11 inches. Beau Coberley was right behind with a mark of 18-11 1/2.

David Disney took first in the high jump, going for 5-10.

The sprint medley of Josh Larsen, Randall, Coberley and Cameron Bannister was first (1:40.32), along with the distance medley of Jake Tollefson, Brian Morrison, Parker Hulbert and Joe Halverson (4:00.87).

Larsen, Disney, Morrison and Randall took first in the 4×200 (1:38.97) and Bannister, Larsen, Disney and Coberley were first in the final event of the night, the 4×400 (3:42.46).

Wolverine girls second in home meet

TAMA — A handful of gold medals helped vault the GMG girls’ track and field team to a second-place finish at their home GMG Relays on Monday. BGM took first with 200 points, while the Wolverines were runners-up with 163 and BCLUW third with 122.

Kyla Wilkening won the 1,500-meter and 3,000 in the distance double, running 5 minutes, 46.89 seconds and 11:53.02, respectively.

Katie Airey helped out with a 100 dash victory, running 13.23. Belle Duncan won the 400 (1:06.08) and the 4×200 relay was first with a 1:57.66. GMG’s sprint medley relay also won in a time of 2:01.37.

In field events, Sydney Sorem won the shot put at a 33-foot, 3-inch mark for first place.

BCLUW touted Jenna Willett in the 400 hurdles (1:14.51), their 4×400 for first (4:40.51) and the 4×800 relay (11:58.39) for their first-place champions.

Willett also won the long jump with a leap of 15-7, while Kiersten Kruse took first with a 4-8 jump in the high jump. Kerrigan Hatch helped out the field events with a first-place throw in the discus at 85-5.

Meskwaki had Danielle Seymour take second in the shot put (32-10 ½) and then fourth in the discus (78-5). Delicia Guervara take fourth in the 3,000 (14:15.22) and fifth in the 800 (2:59.77).

For North Tama, Shelby McKinely was fifth in the 100 (14.02) and sixth in the 400 (1:09.71).

GMG trails only BGM in own invite

TAMA — The BGM boys’ track and field team had just enough points to outlast GMG at its home relays on Monday, winning the meet with 214 points. The Wolverines had 181 for second and North Tama was third with 110.

Between relays and individuals, the Wolverines managed to pull together down the stretch. The shuttle hurdle relay team took first in 1 minutes, 10.12 seconds, followed by a first-place, 100-meter hurdle performance from Connor Casto (18-37).

The 4×400 relay capped off the night with a win, running a 3:58.65. Darrin Anderson was first in the discus, throwing 106 feet, 4 inches. Garrett Groth was second at 99 feet.

Ethan Karsjen also had a win in the 800 (2:13.50) and was also third in the 400 (58.37).

North Tama had Noah Bond win the high jump at 5-6 and Tate Payne in the long jump at 18-1 ½.

Hale Hume won the 400 hurdles as well, in a time of 1:04.28.

For Meskwaki, Sonny Demarce was third in the 400 hurdles (1:06.28) and fifth in the 400 (1:01.22).

Trojan girls tennis tames Maquoketa

TAMA — The South Tama County girls’ tennis team picked up its first victory of the season with an 8-1 win against Maquoketa Monday.

STC (1-2) swept the Cardinals in singles play. Brycelyn Haughey topped Delaney Clark 8-4. Also winning 8-4, Bri Nelson defeated Lizzie Newell. Courtney Anderson and Laura Fernandez-Garcia won 8-2 besting Kacie Varner and Alysia Aise, respectively. Serena Lowe and Abrielle Morgan picked up 8-0 wins, beating Abi Barnes and Camryn Berg, respectively.

Anderson and Fernandez-Garcia defeated Varner and Aise 8-5 in doubles. Lowe and Morgan blanked Barnes and Berg, 8-0. Haughey and Nelson suffered the only loss, falling 9-8 to Clark and Newell.

Smoldt, Amendt medal in triangular

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ and East Marshall girls’ golf teams picked up wins Monday in a triangular played at Wandering Creek Golf Course. The G-R boys scored a 184, besting East Marshall’s 196 and GMG’s 202. The Mustang girls’ 229 topped G-R’s 253. GMG didn’t score as a team.

Rebel senior Joe Smoldt claimed medalist honors with a 42. Teammate Matt Roeding finished runner-up with a 43.

On the girls’ side, East Marshall’s Bobbi Amendt shot a 50 for medalist honors, and teammate Tylyn Eicher scored a 56 for runner-up.

Dru Boliver led the Mustang boys with a 45. Maddie Frischmeyer paced the G-R girls with a 61. Kamrin Chizek led the GMG boys with a 49. Megan Kohn shot a 74 to lead the GMG girls.
