Vinton-Shellsburg edges STC/EM girls

VINTON — A Jaelin Berger goal in the 75th minute wasn’t enough as the South Tama County/East Marshall girls’ soccer team fell 2-1 to Vinton-Shellsburg Friday.

Vinton-Shellsburg (2-7) was called for a handball in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Trojans (2-7). Emily Terrones took the shot, but it was turned away by the Viking goalkeeper. Berger was there for the rebound to put the ball in the back of the net to cut STC/EM’s deficit in half. The Trojans finished with 10 shots on goal, while Abby Llewellyn made seven saves in goal for the Trojans.

“The team played hard and were passing well to create chances and opportunities, but could not find the right combo to get the goals,” said Trojan coach Bob McBain. “This team is so close to breaking through, and when it does, it will be a fun team to watch.”

Iowa’s Doyle Invited to USA U19 Trials

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa freshman guard Kathleen Doyle has been invited to the U19 United States Women’s Basketball National Team Trials. The U19 National Team Trials will be held at the United States Olympic Training Center, May 18-21 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“I am very excited for this opportunity to try out for the USA U19 team,” said Doyle. “I am honored that I have been invited. I get chills thinking about playing against the best players in our country, and having the potential opportunity to play with them against the best players from around the world. This is an opportunity of a lifetime and I can’t wait to take full advantage of it.”

Doyle played in all 34 games and registered 29 starts in her freshman campaign with the Hawkeyes. She averaged 9.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and led the Hawkeyes in assists (4.4) and steals (2.1) per game. A Big Ten all-Freshman Team selection, Doyle dished out five or more assists on 17 occasions and scored in double figures 15 times. She led all conference freshmen in free-throw percentage (70.1) and steals (2.1), and broke program records for assists (148) and steals (71) in a freshman season.

“It is a great honor for Kathleen to be recognized as one of the best in the country and be invited to the trials,” said UI head coach Lisa Bluder. “Competing against the best in her age group in a competitive environment will be a terrific experience for her. These types of experiences open your eyes to how good you can be, and they show you areas where you can grow. Kathleen will thrive in this setting.”

Doyle will compete against the top U19 talent in the United States for a spot on the 12-member team.

The 2017 FIBA U19 World Championship will be held July 22-30 in Udine and Cividale del Friuli, Italy.
