SPORTS SHORTS: Zimmerman aces Legion’s 9th hole

Using a 5-hybrid, Jackie Zimmerman hit a hole-in-one on the ninth hole of the American Legion Memorial Golf Course Monday morning.

Bruce Weir, Allan Knight, Kevin Malloy and Jim Campbell witnessed Zimmerman ace the hole from 116 yards out.

Van Dyk tied for 14th at MVC golf

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Northern Iowa women’s golf team is tied for third after round two of the Missouri Valley Conference golf championship Monday. The Panthers scored a 324 on Monday giving them a two-day total of 634, tying them with Bradley.

Allison Rolinger began second day in 10th, but finished the day in seventh after shooting a 77 for a total 153. South Tama County grad and Class 3A state champion in 2013 and 2014 Paige Van Dyk is tied for 14th. After shooting a day one 79, Van Dyk scored a day two 78 for a 157 total.

The final round of the championship will be played today with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

STC girls tennis falls at Independence

INDEPENDENCE — Laura Fernandez-Garcia picked up a win in singles play, and Serena Lowe and Abrielle Morgan earned a victory in doubles, but the South Tama County girls’ tennis team fell 7-2 to Independence Monday.

Fernandez-Garcia went the distance against Kelsey Cain, collecting the 9-8 (9-7) win. Lowe and Morgan defeated Cain and Madi Schroeder 8-4 in doubles.

STC travels to South Hardin on Thursday.

Spartan tennis team trumps Knights

LAPORTE CITY — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck had no problems dispatching the Union tennis team in a 7-2 win Monday night.

Tjaden Meester, Chase Boren, Garrett Weldon, Jordan Hook and Sam Ollendieck all won their singles matches. Meester had some extra fun, winning 7-6, 7-5 in his matches. Other than Weldon topping Cade Rahlf 7-6 in the first set of his match, the Spartans took care of business by nothing less than 6-2 sets.

Boren and Weldon then bested Rahlf and Taylor Brown 10-4 in their doubles matcha dn Jordan Hook and Landon Graham won 10-1 against Ollendieck and Mason Thomsen.
