Arifi’s round-tripper propels East Marshall to 2-0

LE GRAND — Juliana Arifi homered for the second time in as many games and the East Marshall softball team improved to 2-0 with a 3-0 victory against BGM on Thursday night.

Arifi’s solo home run put the Mustangs in front in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman hurler Kodie Hoskey got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth and East Marshall expanded its lead with two runs in the bottom half. Arifi plated another run with fielder’s choice and Ellen Hungerford drove in another with a single.

Maria Rasmusson also had a double among East Marshall’s six hits in the win.

The Mustangs go to the Williamsburg Tournament on Saturday, facing Class 3A No. 13 Albia at 10:45 a.m. and North Mahaska at 12:30 p.m.

LATE WEDNESDAY

East Marshall 4, Denver 1

LE GRAND — East Marshall freshman Kodie Hoskey struck out 14 in her varsity debut and the Mustangs defeated Denver 4-1 in Wednesday’s cross-NICL pairing.

Hoskey scattered three hits and a walk, allowing one unearned run in the top of the sixth inning of her complete-game performance.

East Marshall leadoff hitter Melinda Puumala had a team-leading two hits, scoring once and driving in a run, and Juliana Arifi had a two-run home run in the third inning to put the Mustangs in front 3-0.

LATE TUESDAY

AGWSR 7, Hampton-Dumont 6

ACKLEY — Mariah Jimmerson’s two-run double to straightaway center field rallied the AGWSR softball team to a 7-6 victory against Hampton-Dumont in Tuesday’s season-opener.

The visiting Bulldogs trailed from the outset before coming back to take a 6-4 lead with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Cassy Miller’s three-run homer provided the go-ahead spark for H-D, but AGWSR had the answer in its last-chance at-bat.

The Cougars scored three times in the home half of the seventh, highlighted by Jimmerson’s walk-off winner.

Anna Jaspers finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored, and winning pitcher Taryan Barrick was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Her courtesy runner Haley Bakker scored twice.

Barrick went the distance in the circle for AGWSR, allowing two earned runs on five hits and eight walks while striking out nine.

South Hardin 10, Dike-New Hartford 6

DIKE — Miquela Teske and Jakota Maakstead had three hits apiece to help the South Hardin softball team win its season-opener Tuesday, beating Dike-New Hartford 10-6 in a cross-NICL contest.

South Hardin scored seven runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead for good.

Teske led off for the Tigers, going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two stolen bases. Maakstead finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Kiera Anderson was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. She also stole three bases.

South Hardin hurler Holly Talbot allowed six hits, four walks and five earned runs, striking out six in the win.

West Marshall 12, Bondurant-Farrar 0, 4 innings

BONDURANT — Kallie Malloy spun a one-hitter from the circle and the West Marshall softball team whitewashed Bondurant-Farrar 12-0 in four innings in Tuesday’s season-opener for both squads.

Malloy struck out six and did not walk a batter. She also contributed two of the Trojans’ 14 hits offensively. Leadoff batter Brooke Snider finished 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and five RBIs to lead West Marshall at the plate.

Katie Price finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Kylie Cripps and Karissa Blocker drove in three runs apiece.

BCLUW 5, Jesup 1

JESUP — Samantha Ubben and Lauren Anderson combined on a four-hitter and the BCLUW softball team beat Jesup 5-1 in the Comets’ season-opener here Tuesday night.

Ubben surrendered no hits and two walks in three innings, striking out four. Jesup got its lone run unearned to Anderson in the bottom of the seventh. Anderson allowed four hits and two walks in four frames.

Leah Yantis led the BCLUW offense with three hits, including a double. Five different players each contributed a single, with Jordyn Beeghly, Kaylee Goecke and Anderson each driving in a run.
