Bobcat girls golf 3rd at CIML Iowa

Kassy Vest

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown girls’ golf team turned last week’s education into this week’s knowledge, using their new lessons to drop 20 strokes on the back nine Monday during the CIML Iowa Conference meet at Mason City Country Club.

The Bobcats, who carded a 202 in their dual meet defeat to the host Mohawks six days earlier, rebounded in a big way Monday en route to a third-place finish in the conference tournament.

Led by Kassy Vest’s fifth-place round of 84, Marshalltown shot a 375 that trailed only Mason City (350) and Johnston (362) in the six-team meet.

Johnston, which went 5-0 during conference duals, fell to Mason City despite having its four scoring golfers finish in the top 11. The Mohawks’ four scorers each placed 13th or better, and Marshalltown’s third-place result came as a result of four scorers in the top 14.

“It’s great to see four of our girls come home with conference medals,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “We’ve show continual improvement all season long, but at this point of the year we’re trying to get the girls thinking less about the mechanics of their swings and focusing more on their target and the shot in front of them.”

The Bobcats’ marked improvement on the back nine was propelled by Vest’s impressive showing on Monday. The MHS junior had a birdie, two bogeys and six pars on the back nine, shooting a 1-over-par 37 to chop 16 shots off her previous trip around the Mason City course.

“Kassy Vest has a phenomenal back nine,” said Johnson. “On what can be some tricky greens, she only had 14 putts through her final nine holes.”

Also medalling for MHS was senior Emily Vest, who placed 10th with her round of 94. Juniors Emily Hass and Ciara Feldman also earned some hardware for their performances, placing 12th and 14th, respectively, with rounds of 97 and 100. Bella Russell contributed a 104 that did not count toward the Bobcats’ total, but still would have been enough to keep the team ahead of Dowling Catholic (387), Urbandale (418) and Fort Dodge (491).

“Our girls have been playing their best golf of the year and we’re looking forward to seeing what happens Monday at Jester Park.”

Marshalltown’s Class 5A regional will include 10 teams at Jester Park Golf Course near Granger. The top two teams and five individuals will advance to the state tournament, which will be held May 30-31 at Coldwater Links in Ames.
