Comet girls get state golf berth

WINTERSET — The BCLUW girls’ golf team got the job done to advance to 2017 Class 2A state golf tournament next week with a second-place finish in the 2A Region 2B at Winterset County Club on Monday.

Lauren Anderson shot a team-low 96 to finish seventh overall and lead the Comets to the state tournament with a team total of 406. Treynor won the regional with a 359.

Mackenzie Trinkle had the Comets’ second-lowest score with a 98 and Madison Trinkle was through with a 106. Bailey Ashton, too, shot 106 to be the fourth scorer.

The Comets will join Treynor at Jester Park Golf Course near Granger on Tuesday and Wednesday, teeing off at 9 a.m.

Grundy Center girls denied

LAKE MILLS — The Grundy Center girls’ golf team failed to make the state tournament as a team for the second consecutive year, after appearing 11-straight seasons, as they placed fourth at the Class 2A Region 3 meet with a 413 at Rice Lake Golf Course.

It’s the first time the Spartans have failed to make the state tournament in back-to-back years since 1989-1990.

Schafer earns state bid

WYOMING — North Tama’s Claire Schafer is headed to the Class 1A state golf tournament at the American Legion Golf Course on Tuesday after earning an individual qualifying slot Monday at Little Bear Recreation Club.

Schafer qualified for the regional final round with teammate Olivia Schrier, as the two took first and second place at last week’s first round regional in Tripoli. Schrier did not advance.

Schafer shot a 91 and was the runner-up on Monday in Wyoming. She will tee off at the 1A meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 a.m.

AGWSR duo falls short

LIVERMORE – AGWSR golfers Mandy Willems and Molly Abkes both failed to qualify for next week’s Class 1A state tournament at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Willems and Abkes both qualified individually by shooting 98 at last week’s first round of regionals, but did not make it in the top five Monday to move on.
