Cyclones climb to 14th in NCAA Golf Championship
SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Iowa State men’s golf team was trending on the second day of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship at Rich Harvest Farms.
The Cyclones fired a 3-under 285 to move into a tie for 14th place in the overall team standings at 578.
The first cut is tomorrow when the top-15 teams will advance to the fourth round of stroke play on Monday.
Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank was pleased with the Cyclones’ performance in round two.
“It was a solid round overall and I’m really proud of how the guys played today,” Tank said. “We took advantage of a lot of birdie opportunities out there and continue to keep ourselves in position.”
UNLV is in first place at 562, one shot ahead of Oklahoma at 563.
The Cyclones got a shot in the arm today behind the outstanding play of senior Ruben Sondjaja and junior Denzel Ieremia.
Sondjaja was a model of consistency this afternoon, carding five birdies and just one bogey en route to a 4-under 68. He closed out his round going 3-under on the final eight holes to move into a tie for 41st in the medalist race at 143.
Ieremia led Saturday with a 2-under 70 to move him into a tie for 41st (143).
Senior Nick Voke bounced back with an even-par 72. The shot of the day was a 200-yard seven iron Voke stuck to two feet for a birdie on No. 15. He currently sits in a tie for 93rd at 148.
