Cyclones miss cut for final day at NCAA golf

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. — The Iowa State men’s golf team failed to make the 15-team cut for the final round of the NCAA Championships, and placed 18th on Sunday at Rich Harvest Farms.

It’s the best finish by an Iowa State team at the national meet in the Cyclone modern era. Coming into the final meet of the season, the Cyclones were seeded 29th.

“It’s a great accomplishment for us to finish in the top-20 at the NCAA finals,” said ISU head coach Andrew Tank. “We came up a little short today because we were hoping to continue our stay here a little longer. But when you step back and look at what we accomplished this year, and what the guys have done on and off the golf course, I just feel real good about where the program is headed.”

Junior Denzel Ieremia did qualify, individually, for the final round of the championships. Ieremia is one of nine individuals not on a top-15 team playing on Monday. He was 1-under Sunday to improve to a 2-under 214 for the tournament.

“Denzel is going to be our leader next year and he is playing well,” Tank said. “He was bogey-free for 17 holes today, which is really impressive. I am excited for him to get another opportunity tomorrow in the final round.”

Tripp Kinney carded a 73 Sunday and finished tied for 76th with a 221. Senior Ruben Sondjaja wrapped up his career by tying for 76th at 221 as well. Sondjaja’s round of 68 on the second day was the best score by a Cyclone all tournament.

Nick Voke finished in a tie for 95th with a 223. He has the school record in wins, with five, and career stroke average (71.89).

“The hardest part of today has been saying goodbye to [Voke and Sondjaja],” Tank said. “Knowing that the journey we had with them is over is sad. They brought our program to new heights in their four years here. They have been great leaders and it was really hard and emotional knowing this was the last time they were going to be playing as Cyclones.”

Across the three days, the Cycones shot 293-285-297 for an 875 team total. They tied with North Carolina and were just two strokes back of 17th-place Alabama.
