Cyclones shoot 293 in NCAA opener

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Iowa State men’s golf team fired a first-round 293 at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship this afternoon at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

The afternoon golfers were unable to finish their rounds due to heavy rain in the area. Those teams will finish their remaining holes today before the start of the second round. Of the 15 teams to get all 18 holes completed, the Cyclones are tied for seventh.

Iowa State was led by true freshman Sam Vincent, who fired an even-par 72. Vincent closed out his round 2-under in his last six holes.

“That’s a great round for Sam,” said Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank. “He was really solid for a freshman playing in his first NCAA Championship. Shooting even-par on this golf course is a very good round.”

Denzel Ieremia and Tripp Kinney both were one stroke back of Vincent after posting 1-over 73. Ruben Sondjaja finished in with 75 and Nick Voke carded a 76.

The first cut is after 54 holes when the top-15 teams will advance to the fourth round of stroke play on Monday. Rounds two and three will take place on Saturday and Sunday.
