MHS girls bow out vs. Ankeny
ANKENY — The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team ended up with two forfeits and fell to Ankeny 5-0 in Monday’s Class 2A Region 1 semifinal.
Ankeny swept the Bobcats in the top four singles bouts, including a forfeit at No. 4. Marshalltown was trying to fight from behind in the Nos. 5 and 6 singles contests as junior Sarah Jacobs was leading in the second set 5-2 after dropping the opener 6-4 to Alexis Legg. Fellow MHS junior Libby Loney lost her first set 6-4 but was all square, 6-all, against Miranda Greathouse in the second set when the dual ended.
The first team to five match wins advances, stopping the dual. The Bobcats’ forfeit at No. 2 doubles sealed the victory for Ankeny once that match was supposed to take to the court.
The meet, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed to Monday because of rain. The Bobcats, however, were unable to field a full team.
MHS head coach Blake Cutright announced after the match that he was stepping down from the position.
Ankeny went on to lose 5-0 to Johnston, which will play Ames in Ankeny at 3 p.m. today in the first round of the state tournament.
