PLEASANT HILL — The idea is to be playing your best when the postseason rolls around. The Marshalltown girls’ golf has pronounced itself ready.

The Bobcats shot a season-best 18-hole total of 360, finishing second behind a stellar Atlantic squad on Thursday at the Southeast Polk Invite at Copper Creek Golf Club. Three MHS players posted their career-low rounds to lead the team into next week’s postseason play.

Marshalltown junior Kassy Vest shot the third-best score of the day, finishing fourth on a cardback with her 11-over-par 82. Senior Emily Vest shot a 90, her best round yet, and junior Lauren Propp posted a 92 from the No. 6 position to help the Bobcats climb to the front of the race for second place.

Bella Russell, a junior, contributed a 96 to round out Marshalltown’s scoring performances. Ciara Feldman finished in with a 104 and Emily Hass had a 105 as well for the ‘Cats.

“To have three girls in Kassy Vest, Emily Vest and Lauren Propp all shoot career-lows on the same day is highly encouraging as we head into the final stretch of the season,” said Bobcat head coach Lucas Johnson. “All three did a great job keeping the ball in play and avoiding the big numbers that can easily happen at Copper Creek if you’re not in control of your swing.”

Dowling Catholic’s Anne Gradoville garnered meet medalist honors with a 1-under 70, while Atlantic ran away with the team title. The Trojans were represented by four of the day’s six lowest scores, including runner-up Brooke Newell’s 73, and finished with a winning 322.

Marshalltown’s 360 was 11 strokes ahead of third-place finisher Indianola, while West Des Moines Valley (374) and Southeast Polk (377) were close behind in the 12-team field.

“We’d been a bit off in the last couple meets, so it was great to see the girls put together their best round of the year today,” Johnson added.

The Bobcats play their first postseason meet on Monday, visiting Mason City Country Club for the CIML Iowa Conference tournament. Class 5A regionals are the following Monday, May 22, and MHS will visit Jester Park Golf Course near Granger in hopes of advancing to state.
