SPORTS SHORTS: GMG softball team scores first victory

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG softball team evened its record back up with a 12-2 win in five innings against Tripoli on Friday.

After falling in the season opener, the Wolverines (1-1, 1-1 Iowa Star) came back with offense Friday. Madi Krull was 3-for-3 with three runs, Zoe Duncan added a 2-for-2 line with a run, and Maesa Groth was 1-for-1 with two runs scored.

Kelsey Vaverka went all five innings, giving up four hits, zero earned runs and struck out five.

The Wolverines host North Tama on Tuesday.

Royals softball doubles up on Dons

MC CALLSBURG — Kassie Robinson went seven innings, giving up seven hits and just one earned run on five strikeouts to get the Colo-NESCO softball team another win, 4-2 against Don Bosco on Friday.

Junior Mackenna Ruffcorn helped out scoring efforts with a home run on her way to a 2-for-3 night at the plate. She tallied four RBIs. Rylee Purvis was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and Molly Barten was 1-for-2 at the plate.

Colo-NESCO hosts Nevada on Tuesday.

Oetker aces Elmwood’s third hole

John Oetker recorded a hole-in-one at Elmwood Country Club on Friday, scoring the ace on the third hole with use of his 8-iron.

The shot was witnessed by Bill Smothers, Bruce Williams, Bob Davis and Jim Wolken.

Bell sinks shot at Wandering Creek

Tim Bell scored a hole-in-one on Wednesday at Wandering Creek Golf Course, acing the 120-yard seventh hole with his 9-iron.

Bell’s shot was witnessed by Brian Wilkie, Dick Russell and Mike Younkin.

ISU vs. Vols in Big 12/SEC Challenge

AMES — The Iowa State men’s basketball team will host Tennessee on Jan. 27 in the 2018 Big 12/SEC Challenge. For the third-straight year, all games will be played in one day with ESPN networks televising each game.

Iowa State and Tennessee have met twice, splitting the previous meetings. This will be the first meeting between the schools since 1977.

Iowa State is 2-2 all-time in the challenge, beating Auburn and Arkansas at home the first two seasons and falling on the road to Texas A&M and Vanderbilt the last two years.

The Big 12 boasts a 25-15 lead in the series.
