SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans win opener of SEW tournament

MILO — The West Marshall softball team rapped out six doubles among 17 hits and topped Council Bluffs Jefferson 17-4 on Saturday in the first of a two-game tournament. The Trojans’ second game was rained out.

Brooke Snider was 2-for-3 with a double, four runs scored, four RBIs and three stolen bases. Katie Price helped out as well, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Grace Porter pitched all four innings, giving up four hits and no earned runs, striking out two.

Kylie Cripps added a line of 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double, Porter was 2-for-2 with two doubles and Karisa Blocker was 2-for-3 with a double.

West Marshall is at Grundy Center on Thursday for an NICL West Division contest.

Ranked Cougars split at Newman

MASON CITY — The AGWSR softball team went 1-1 at a tournament in Mason City on Saturday, defeating St. Ansgar 12-0 in five innings, and falling to Newman Catholic 6-4.

The Class 1A No. 10 Cougars (3-2) tallied 12 runs on 12 hits, led by Mariah Jimmerson going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a home run and two RBIs. Rachel Sicard also hit a solo home run. Taryan Barrick added to the yardage as she hit a home run, going 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Alana Groninga led off, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.

In game two, Barrick took the loss, going five innings, giving up four hits and four earned runs. She struck out 10 but walked six.

Makenna Kuper was 1-for-2 with a double, one of seven hits for the Cougars. Anna Jaspers was 1-for-3 with a run and Jimmerson was 0-for-2 with a run scored.

AGWSR hosts Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Thursday for an NICL West Division match.

Mustans fall twice at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — The East Marshall softball team wrapped up a doubleheader tournament on the road Saturday with back-to-back losses to North Mahaska (2-0) and to Albia (4-3).

The Mustangs (2-2) had just two hits in the first contest with Hannah Birks going 1-for-3 and Madison Duncan finishing 1-for-2.

Maria Rasmusson pitched six innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

Against Albia, the Mustangs got just four hits in an extra-inning contest.

Rasmusson was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Madison Farrington was 0-for-3 with another RBI and Kodie Hoskey was 1-for-4. Duncan scored the other run, while Albia scored the walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth.

Hoskey went 7 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits, one earned run while striking out 13.

East Marshall hosts South Hardin on Tuesday before hosting BCLUW on Wednesday in NICL West play.
