Trio with East Marshall ties honored by IIAC
CEDAR RAPIDS — Three players with East Marshall High School ties were honored with selection to the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s season-ending softball teams.
Simpson College sophomores Ashley Allen and Madison Rasmusson both received all-Iowa Conference second-team selection, the league office announced Tuesday, and Simpson College sophomore Mariah Fritz received honorable mention.
Allen, a catcher, led Simpson this spring with 29 hits, four home runs, 17 RBIs and 10 walks. The East Marshall graduate from Laurel batted .330 with a .390 on-base percentage and a team-best .545 slugging percentage, while also throwing out four would-be base-stealers on 23 attempts.
Allen’s batterymate, Madison Rasmusson, is a Marshalltown native and daughter of East Marshall principal Matt Rasmusson. Madison pitched and played outfield for the Storm, leading the team with a .375 batting average and a .403 on-base percentage. In the circle, Madison went 5-11 with a save and led Simpson with 110 1/3 innings pitched. The Lynnville-Sully graduate struck out 38, walked 19, and had a 3.24 earned run average.
Simpson finished the season 8-28 overall, going 3-13 in Iowa Conference play.
Fritz, an East Marshall grad and Coe College transfer, has a 1.46 ERA and a 10-4 record for Central, which hosts a four-team NCAA Regional tournament this weekend in Pella. Fritz has struck out 50 and walked 30 in 95 2/3 innings pitched for the Dutch (32-8, 13-3).
