Ex-Tiger Clyburn signs with CSKA Moscow

Will Clyburn

MOSCOW — Recent EuroLeague champion CSKA Moscow has added to its roster in hopes of getting back to the top, signing 6-foot-7 forward Will Clyburn on Tuesday to a two-year deal.

The Detroit, Mich., native who starred at Marshalltown Community College from 2008-2010, joins a CSKA Moscow club that placed third in the EuroLeague’s Final Four this season and won the championship in 2016.

Clyburn’s professional career began with Ratiopharm Ulm of Germany and continued with Hapoel Holon Jerusalem, where he led the Israeli League in scoring at 20.9 points per game in the 2015-16 season.

The 27-year-old Clyburn joins the Russian powerhouse after averaging 13 points and 5.1 rebounds in 34 EuroLeague games last season with Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul, finishing 10th in the league in scoring while leading Darussafaka to the playoffs in his first year with the club.

“I am excited to become a part of this organization,” said Clyburn. “It has always been one of the top European teams year in and year out. It is a big honor and a big privilege to join this team.”

Clyburn was an all-Iowa Community College Athletic Conference first-team selection in his sophomore season at MCC. He transfered to the University of Utah, where he was a second-team all-Big West Conference honoree, and he closed his collegiate career at Iowa State, where he was named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year.

“With Will here we are adding some size at the 3-position, where he brings his ability to play back to the basket and face to the basket, and make his own plays,” said CKSA Moscow coach Dimitris Itoudis. “Clyburn also possesses good rebounding instinct, he can defend several positions. It is important that he is motivated to play for us, and we welcome Will to the CSKA family.”
