Malloy shines in two Trojan victories
STATE CENTER — The Class 3A No. 10 West Marshall softball team suffered its second loss in three days, falling 13-1 in five innings to 4A No. 1 Benton Community in Saturday’s Rose Festival Tournament championship game.
The Trojans (19-2) defeated Grand View Chrstian 8-3 and Greene County 4-0 to reach the title game. In the win against Grand View Christian, West Marshall pitcher Kallie Malloy tossed a two-hitter over six innings while striking out six and walking one. She also finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs.
Emma Meyer also went 3-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Brooke Snider was 2-for-2 with a walk, a double, a run and an RBI.
Malloy spun another two-hitter in a six-inning shutout of Greene County. She walked one and struck out nine for the win. Renae Schaper went 3-for-3 to lead the Trojans offensively, driving in a pair. Katie Price went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and scored twice, while Karisa Blocker had an RBI single.
Snider’s sixth home run of the season was the only offense West Marshall could muster, leading off the bottom of the first inning. Anna Stenberg struck out six and walked four from the circle for Benton (22-3), while Jaicee Lyons went 4-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Bobcats.
Loran Nicholson took the loss for the Trojans, allowing 10 runs — seven earned — on nine hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings. She struck out one. Grace Porter, the 2017 Rose Queen, pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
West Marshall is at home every night this week, hosting Grundy Center, Nevada, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, PCM and South Hardin. The Trojans go to the Bobcat Classic on Saturday in Marshalltown.
