SPORTS SHORTS: BCLUW tops AGWSR in league thriller

CONRAD — The Comets kept pace while the Cougars must now chase.

The Class 2A No. 15 BCLUW softball team scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning and withstood the late comeback attempt by 1A No. 5 AGWSR, and the Comets prevailed 2-1 to remain in a tie with 3A No. 10 West Marshall atop the NICL West Division standings.

Leah Yantis broke up Taryan Barrick’s perfect game with a leadoff walk for the Comets (19-7, 8-1) in the bottom of the fourth. Her pinch-runner Parker Scurr moved up on Jenna Willett’s slug-bunt single and scored when Jordyn Beeghly’s bunt was misplayed. Easton Swanson followed with a single to plate Willett for a 2-0 BCLUW lead.

AGWSR (19-5, 6-3) struck back in the top of the sixth when Makenna Kuper doubled and scored when a ball of Barrick’s bat was misplayed. But that was all the Cougars managed as BCLUW captured the regular-season sweep.

Samantha Ubben struck out six, walked one and allowed only four hits in the pitching win for the Comets. Barrick surrendered just two hits, both of which came in BCLUW’s two-run fourth.

Comets come back to stun Cougars

BEAMAN — The BCLUW baseball team saved its best for last.

The Comets scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning — all unearned to AGWSR pitching — to rally back from a 6-1 deficit for a 7-6 victory in Wednesday’s NICL West Division clash.

BCLUW (11-8, 7-2) scored five runs with two outs, capped by Calob Keller’s walk-off, RBI single to drive in Blake Mann as the game-winning run.

Keller finished with three singles and two RBIs for the Comets, who did not lead in the game until Mann crossed home plate.

A pair of hit batsmen set the comeback in motion, and run-scoring singles by Troy Dolphin and Logan Mann chased AGWSR starting pitcher Liam Stubbe from the mound. Blake Mann greeted Caleb Bartling with a two-run double, and Clay Silver walked before Keller delivered the game-winning RBI.

Blake Mann had two doubles and two RBIs, and Dolphin had two singles for the Comets. Ian Showers also singled. Dolphin got the win for a clean inning of relief, preventing AGWSR (5-6, 4-5) from doing more damage after the Cougars got an insurance run across in the top of the seventh against Keller. In six innings, Keller allowed six runs on nine hits and five walks, striking out five in a no-decision.

Bartling faced just three batters but took the loss for AGWSR. Stubbe led the Cougar bats with a two-run double, while Nathan Karsjens, Alex Hames and Joe Wiarda each had two singles.

Mustangs get mercy win over Spartans

GILMAN — Austin Elliot’s two-out, two-run double and Zane Johnson’s bases-clearing double propeled the East Marshall baseball team to a seven-run third inning eruption and a 12-2, five-inning victory over Grundy Center in an NICL West Division contest Wednesday night.

East Marshall (5-14, 3-5) broke a 2-all tie with seven runs in the third, and the Mustangs finished off the mercy-rule win with two more tallies in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Jacob Svendsen was the beneficiary of all the offensive support as he pitched all five innings for the win, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out three.

Justin Ridout finished 3-for-3 with a double, driving in three runs and scoring twice, while Jordan McAnulty was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the Mustang bats. Gage Hulin singled and scored twice, and Kam Hoskins had an RBI single.

Jared Krausman had two of Grundy Center’s five hits and scored both runs for the Spartans (1-16, 1-8). Travis Kuester, Cole Weber and Garret Weldon all singled. Braidan Buhrow took the loss on the mound, allowing 11 runs — nine earned — on eight hits and five walks. He struck out six.

CAL answers GMG’s offensive outburst

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG softball team scored six runs for the first time in 11 days, but the Wolverines’ scoring outburst came right after CAL reached its peak.

The visiting Cadets tallied 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning on their way to a 16-6, six-inning win over GMG in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest. The 16 runs was a season-high and aided the Cadets (3-14, 2-10) in breaking a seven-game losing streak.

GMG’s uprising was fueled by eighth-grader Angel Schewe, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a single, a stolen base and a two-run triple. She also made her varsity pitching debut but suffered the loss, allowing 13 runs — 10 earned — on nine hits and 10 walks over 4 1/3 innings. She struck out two before getting relieved in the circle by Madi Krull, who gave up three runs but also struck out two.

Belle Duncan and Ashanti Rinehart both had RBI singles for the Wolverines (4-16, 3-10), while Zoe Duncan and Maesa Groth both added hits.

Malloy’s one-hitter helps Trojans win

STATE CENTER — Kallie Malloy spun a one-hitter and Kayla Cripps drove in three runs to lead the Class 3A No. 10 West Marshall softball team past Nevada 8-1 in a non-conference contest here Tuesday night.

Cripps finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Renae Schaper led the Trojans (21-2) by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Malloy and Kylie Cripps both added two hits.

The Royals (4-15) got 5 1/3 innings of relief pitching from Sean Cutler, who earned the win after not allowing a run. He surrendered three hits and three walks, striking out one after replacing starter Matthew Hill in the bottom of the first.

Colo-NESCO rallied from an early 5-1 deficit to take the lead for good thanks to an eight-run explosion in the top of the second. The Royals piled on four runs in the sixth to end the game prematurely.

Bryce Niemeyer went 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while Hill was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs. Sean Cutler finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Mason Lytle drove in three runs and Garret Tiarks plated two more.

Kickbush pushes Rebels past Indians

REINBECK — Caden Kickbush went the distance on the mound for the second time in as many starts, and his five-hitter helped Gladbrook-Reinbeck turn back Clarksville 7-3 in Tuesday’s non-conference affair.

Kickbush struck out five, walked one, and allowed three runs on five hits to improve to 2-0 on the mound this season for the Rebels (7-6). G-R trailed 3-2 before scoring five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead.

Tyler Tscherter, Joe Smoldt and Mason Skovgard had two hits apiece to lead G-R’s 11-hit attack. Alex Tscherter was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Keagan Giesking had a pinch-hit, RBI double for the Rebels.
